Apple's big 'Let's talk iPhone' event: 4 predictions (The Week)

New York ? CEO Tim Cooke is set to unveil the hotly anticipated next-generation iPhone on October 4. What can we expect?

This week, Apple invited the media to attend a mysterious October 4 event with the terse message, "Let's talk iPhone." It's about time: The long-awaited iPhone 5 ? the company's first major product release since Steve Jobs stepped down as CEO in August ? already has the rumor mill feverishly churning. What can we expect? Here, four predictions:

1. There will only be one new iPhone
A theory recently given credence?by Apple board member Al Gore?suggested that two phones would be released simultaneously ? a new lower-priced model and a new high-end device (presumably the iPhone 5). Suggesting otherwise is a curious graphic embedded in the "Let's talk iPhone" email (pictured). Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt finds it "pretty clear" that the first three icons represent the event's date, time and location. Yet the mysterious "1" hovering over the phone icon, when taken with the tagline "Let's talk iPhone" (singular), could be read as Apple's not-so-subtle hint that only one device will be announced. ?

2. The next model will have superior voice-recognition technology
The "Let's talk iPhone" tagline may be a "double entendre du jour," says Josh Lowensohn at?CNET. Apple has reportedly wanted to revamp its voice-recognition technology since its April, 2010 acquisition of Siri, "a company that mixes natural language processing" for web-based search. Google's Android OS's voice-recognition capabilities have left Apple devices "in the dust" and an update to the software?? untouched since 2009???would make sense.

3. It will be faster, and have a much cooler camera
The iPhone 4 boasted the same A4 chip as the first-generation iPad and the new iPhone 5 will likely adopt the "dual-core A5 chip" inside the much-faster iPad 2,?says Jared Newman at?PC World. Another good bet: A more capable 8-megapixel camera. "Apple has a history of improving the iPhone's camera with each generation."

4. And you won't have to wait long to get it
Signs are pointing to a Friday, October 14 launch date ? just two short weeks after the announcement. "A Friday iPhone launch would not be new,"?writes?Apple Insider, pointing out that every other model arrived on a Friday with the exception of the iPhone 4, released on a Thursday.?The buzz would also corroborate the mid-October launch date suggested by Stephane Richard, CEO of French wireless company Orange, one of Europe's largest mobile carriers.

There will be blood: Lytle goes from Octagon to politics

Recently retired fighter Chris Lytle hinted at a future in politics while still in his fighting career. Now that he has given up fighting and is just a firefighter and the father of four children, Lytle has decided to fill up his scads of free time by running for the Indiana State Senate.

Lytle is well-known of one of MMA's good guys, always ready to share his time with a fan or a member of the media. Over the course of his 11-year career, he continued to serve as a firefighter. In the cage, he was the kind of fighter fans always wanted to watch because he was always willing to put on a good show, winning 10 fight night bonuses from the UFC.

Now, Lytle wants to put those qualities to work in the state government. He has already started campaigning, visiting future constituents all over the 28th district and using the tagline, "Fighting for Indiana's Future." Though it's been more than a month since his retirement bout, a submission of Dan Hardy, Lytle is sporting a black eye in many of his pictures. He probably had a fun time explaining that to the people at the senior citizen's center.

Whenever I meet with the Chairperson of Governor?s Fitness Council to discuss the Board?s yearly activities, she always lectures me about good eating habits and physical activity as if I just came on the scene the day before. The more she rambles on and on, at the end of the day she tells me: ?It?s the mother in me.? Well, mother hen raked me over the coals last week about my eating habits when I dine out. Boy, she chewed me out good and told me I better show some improvement! So, if I must suffer through these lectures so should you. ?Here?s her breakdown.

Breakfast

Do not abandon good eating habits if you are ?on the run? and must have fast food.? There are some on the market that can actually satisfy your nutritional needs without that tremendous overload of FAT and sodium.? Fast foods may not make ideal meals, but some do offer healthy carbohydrates and only moderate amounts of FAT.? You also can downplay FAT excess by sorting out subtle differences among them.? Consider these points the next time you are grabbing breakfast on the run:

1. Keep it simple.? The fewer ingredients you order in breakfast sandwiches, the lower the FAT, sodium and calories.? Forget the sausage and bacon.
2. Can?t get enough muffins.? Muffins are recent additions to several fast-food menus.? McDonald?s apple-bran muffin is a GOOD choice because it has no FAT or cholesterol and only 190 calories.
3. Hold the butter.? The English muffin is the least fattening breakfast food on most quick-service menus.? Order it dry and drink juice to wash it down.? This virtually eliminates FAT.
4. Choose ?cakes? instead of eggs.? Pancakes offer more energizing carbohydrate and less FAT and cholesterol than egg dishes or biscuits.? Go easy on the syrup.

Lunch and Dinner

Most major franchise fast-food restaurants now shun animal FATS and try to dilute calorie-laden menus with ?lighter? fare, such as salads and chicken.? Some of these restaurants add only a fa?ade of healthfulness to food that is still too high in FAT and Sodium.? Be choosey.

Grilled chicken sandwiches, without breading and deep-FAT frying, are the ones to choose.? These sandwiches have at least one-third less FAT than deep-FAT fried chicken sandwiches.? Here are some suggestions for how you truly can trim calories and FAT:

1. Be salad savvy.? Avoid the mistake of thinking ?salad? is synonymous with ?diet food.?? Salads can be sneaky about FAT and calories.? The meat and cheese in chef salads invariably overpower the vegetables to increase FAT and sodium content.? Chicken and seafood salads usually are lower in FAT and calories, averaging less than 200 calories without dressing.? Remember this trick; put the dressing on the side and lightly touch your fork-full of food, just to get the taste.? Ask for low calorie or FAT free salad dressings.
2. Choose chicken carefully.? Chicken may be naturally lower in FAT than hamburger, but when breaded and fried, it loses its nutritional edge.
3. Be suspicious of specialty sandwiches.? Even non-fried sandwiches made with lean turkey or ham can be deceiving.? General clues to keep in mind when deciding about this type of sandwich are its size and the amount of cheese, mayonnaise or special sauces.
4. Order the smallest burger. You know you are headed for calories and FAT if you order a burger billed ?jumbo,? ?ultimate,? ?double? or ?deluxe.?? You may have to search the menu board a bit, but all major franchises offer a hamburger with less than 300 calories.? Condiments such as lettuce, tomato, onion and mustard add very few calories, but mayonnaise and other sauces are packed with calories and FAT.

She found a way to get healthily-prepared chicken or fish in any restaurant.? It takes a bit of explaining to your server, but it CAN be done.? If you order chicken, specify SKINLESS CHICKEN; if you order fish, specify the FRESH FISH.? (Frozen frequently contains some sort of breading and always has preservatives.)? Look your server straight in the eye and explain to him/her that you would like your chicken/fish broiled, grilled or baked, with NO BUTTER, NO SALT, just lemon juice on it.? Also, order extra lemon wedges served with it, so you might squeeze it on top before you begin eating.? If you ask your server to explain it to the cook in this manner, chances are you will get what you asked for.

Broadcom is really throwing its weight behind this whole NFC thing. Its new family of BCM2079x chips have moved to a 40nm manufacturing process which cuts power use by 90-percent and board size by 40-percent. Broadcom claims they're the smallest and most power efficient NFC chips on the market -- and we're not in any position to refute that assertion. The company's Maestro tools have also been upgraded to let their NFC chips speak to a device's Bluetooth and WiFi radios. I?ve been in the personal fitness training industry close to 20 years. A lot has changed in terms of health and fitness training, from aerobics to circuit training and everything in between. even diet programs have changed. from non-fat diets to low carbs diets, it seems with each passing year there is a new fad when it comes to workouts and or diets. But one thing remains the same. the people who get the results they want are the people who log their programs daily. I call it, keeping score.. When we keep score, we try harder. the last thing we want to do is write down, that we didn?t do what we were supposed to do. Having it in the back of your head is one thing, but having it in ink, on paper, is a whole other can of worms. have you every noticed that we keep track of our bank accounts and our car maintenance schedules better than our bodies? Why is this? Without our health, we have nothing.

Set daily, weekly and monthly goals. if you know from day one that there will be challenges, start thinking of solutions in advance. for example, if you have a busy day or week ahead of you, plan your meals in advance. also in regards to your fitness training schedule, maybe it?s best to wake up hour early and do a short program before your day starts so you can cross it off your list. quite often we get so wrapped up in our to-do-lists, we tend to put our health and workouts on the backburner. even if its only 20 mins of activity, make it happen so you can feel proud of your accomplishment and good about keeping score ? writing it down.
