Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ? How To ...

When a booming business is your goal, your focus should be on Affiliate marketing to gain your customer base. Learn and apply these basic tips for successful Internet marketing. You should have a better idea of how to become great with Internet marketing.

Use the actual term ?guarantee? in your online ads when you are marketing on the Internet. This reassures customers and makes them more likely to make a purchase. There are many various guarantees that can be offered. Try different kinds of guarantees when you are setting them up. Select which guarantee is best for the product that is being sold.

It?s ok to go to other online businesses or retailers, you can propose deals of products as well as other services for a discounted price. This tactic is a sound strategy to create connections between multiple markets. This has a cumulative effect of boosting overall revenue. A great example where you can see this is on online booking agents. These agents have negotiated reduced prices on your behalf for airfare, hotels and even car rentals. This is a great option if your business sells products that can be considered supplementary to another company?s products, rather than competing products.

TIP! You cannot use a copy of another website and expect to be successful with it. Search engines have been getting extremely efficient at identifying duplicate content.

Consider using positive motivation as a method to promote your products. Be certain that people understand why your products and services are relevant to their own lives. Shoppers should know this information once they have briefly visited your website or any other page on the web that is relevant to your operations. Encourage your readers to be successful, and they will believe it too.

Your site should be very clear so that any links that you post are easily identifiable. Always ensure that your links are clearly visible and organized for the incoming traffic. Obscure or poorly placed links will often lead to less usage. This could cause one of your main pages to be losing out on a huge profitable angle.

TIP! The appearance and performance of your website is just as important as the in-store buying experience. Routinely audit and test the links, pictures, and online payment systems to identify any bugs or issues that will create difficulties for your customers.

The options at your disposal when it comes to running your business and website can be overwhelming. Make a list of what would be found on your website if it were ideal. You should select a field with which you are familiar and which brings you enjoyment for your niche website marketing efforts. You will find website marketing more simple when you have goals.

When writing content, use simple and plain language to make your points or describe your products. Actually using the word ?easy? in your content will get you some added attention. People generally dislike overly complicated things, so adding tags like ?easy to order? and ?easy to use? can entice them to use your product. This is a wonderful way to increase traffic and sales.

?Fast? is a word that is very effective in advertising campaigns and when used in conjunction with products and services, so be sure to make use of it. Many people are willing to spend a little more money if they can save some time. Make sure to emphasize how fast you can get things done, and than make sure you stick to that.

TIP! Use your email to your business advantage. Make sure these emails contain interesting information.

Split your website into sections, and have a map from which people can choose the products they?d like to see. Remember, adding variety to your page is beneficial but you still want to keep your page structured.

Offer subscription services for your most popular products. As an example, computer paper buyers might enter a subscription service to receive paper every month.

Always view your website in the way that a potential customer would. Is it truly user-friendly? Does it engage your customers? Is it user-friendly? All the SEO in the world will be pointless if your potential customers have trouble navigating your site once they get there.

TIP! To be successful as an Internet marketer, you must be positive about your business and show plenty of enthusiasm. Let people in on how much you love your products, this can help you promote your business easily.

Here is a great tip for successful internet promotion. Have a clear and stated goal on the front page of your site. This page is about selling your product. Your viewer should be able to see what you?re selling and whether they want it instantly when they see this page. If the viewer has to dig for what he or she is looking for, they are sure to leave quickly.

It?s important enough to say again and again: The increased visibility that Online marketing can give to your business is a tremendous opportunity. Most consumers now turn to the Internet to find the products and services they need. Use the tips in this article to get started, and market your business online.

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On The 2012 Switchies, Part 2

The last Switched On covered some of the major Switchie awards for the year, but there are many other products to recognize:

The "Category's Meow" Award for Best New Category Creation goes to Supermechanical's TWINE, a small blue box that can relay information about its environment via WiFi to a website. Its fellow Kickstarter project Ninja Blocks followed suit with a more proactive two-way link to pick up an Honorable Mention.

The "Mulligans Do" Award for Best Product Revamp goes to the Apple iPod family. After a bit of staidness in the venerable iPod nano, Apple came back with larger screens and slender profiles on both the iPod nano and iPod touch. Honorable mentions go to the Kindle family of e- readers, particularly the Kindle Paperwhite, and the Samsung Galaxy S line of smartphones from Samsung, which took a huge leap forward with the Galaxy S III.

China?s coral reefs have shrunk 80% since 1980s: study

China has lost at least 80 percent of its coral reefs in the past 30 years due to development, pollution and overfishing associated with its economic expansion, a new study has found, according to Agence France-Presse.

Researchers from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies and the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology outline what they say is a "grim picture of decline, degradation and destruction? in the latest issue of the journal Conservation Biology, AFP reported.

The coral loss in the South China Sea has been hastened by a lack of cooperation between the six countries in the region that have competing claims over the sea?s oil-rich islands, Radio Australia reported.

"On offshore atolls and archipelagos claimed by six countries in the South China Sea, coral cover has declined from an average of greater than 60 percent to around 20 percent within the past 10-15 years," the report said, according to AFP.

"The window of opportunity to recover the reefs of the South China Sea is closing rapidly, given the state of degradation revealed in this study," report co-author Terry Hughes told AFP.

13 technologies you won't see in 2013

2 hrs.

It seems like only yesterday we were planning for the Maya apocalypse, but like so many other products, the 14th b?ak?tun (next era) has been delayed due to bugs and lack of pre-orders. Yet if you talked to some pundits back in 2011, they?d have told you that the end of days was coming out in Q4 of 2012, along with its competitor, BlackBerry 10.

No doubt, in 2013, several long-rumored products will come to market. However, next year won?t be the year for these 13 gadgets and technologies.

Amazon smartphone

The speculation: After its success selling Amazon-branded Android tablets, the company will launch a smartphone that puts its content front and center and encouraging you to shop wherever you go. Some have even suggested that the company will make it easy to scan prices when you're in a retail store, just so you can see if Amazon sells the item cheaper. Taiwan Economic News recently reported that Foxconn will be manufacturing the handset, which will launch in Q3 or 2013 for $100 to $200.

Why it?won't happen in 2013: Breaking into the U.S. smartphone market with any hope of success is extremely difficult for new players. The four major carriers rule their networks with an iron fist, either forcing phone vendors to go along with their software?strategies or outright rejecting products that don't meet their immediate business goals. Just ask Google, which decided to release the Nexus 4 as an unlocked device rather than deal with AT&T and Verizon. (A subsidized version is available for T-Mobile.)

From a business perspective, playing in the smartphone space makes little sense for Amazon as the company's goal is not to sell phones but to sell media and dry goods through its online store. The company already has its shopping app preloaded as crapware on many Android devices, and the company could leverage these placements in 2013 by finally bringing Amazon Instant Video to Android devices and adding a price-scanning app to the mix. Why spend money building and supporting a smartphone when you can just get users of other phones to buy the all the same products from you?

Windows?Blue

The speculation:
Microsoft?will launch the next major version of Windows, codenamed "Windows Blue," as soon as spring 2013. The new OS will get at least annual updates over the air so consumers and businesses with Blue always have the latest verison of the OS.

Why it won't happen in 2013: If the rumors are true, a company that usually releases operating systems on a three-year cadence will suddenly start selling a new mainstream operating system less than a year after Windows 8?launched. And before Microsoft starts selling its next OS, it will no doubt go through months of public and developer previews as it has with Windows 7 and 8.

So, for Windows Blue to launch even as late as Q4 of 2013, Microsoft would have to announce a developer preview or public beta at the beginning of the year. With all the controversy surrounding Windows 8, news of another new Windows OS would convince users who were on the fence about upgrading to delay their purchases. Talk about Osborning yourself.

Google Nexus 4 with LTE connectivity

The speculation:
When Google released its Nexus 4 phone, users were shocked to learn that the device did not support 4G LTE, the fastest type of mobile network.?To avoid dealing with carriers and building carrier-specific versions of its handset, the company decided to go with simple HSPA support, a decision Android head Andy Rubin called a "tactical issue."?Despite Rubin's comments, some believe that Google will eventually offer an LTE version of the Nexus 4, because it provided carrier-specific LTE versions of its prior-gen phone, the Galaxy Nexus. The Nexus 4 even has a disabled LTE radio inside of it, though this radio can only support a handful of bands that most areas of the U.S. don't use.

Why it won't happen: With the Nexus 4, Google is trying to make a point about its independence from carriers. Users who want a nearly-identical phone with LTE can already buy the LG Optimus G. However, not including LTE on phones is a poor long-term strategy. I wouldn't be surprised if Google's next handset, rumored to be the Motorola X, had LTE that worked with at least a couple of the major U.S. carriers' networks.

Wireless charging pads hit public places

The speculation: If you've been following the news lately you might expect to see wireless charging stations?appear at all your favorite haunts in 2013. This past fall, Nokia, HTC and others released phones with Qi-standard wireless charging support built-in while. At the same time, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf announced its plan to install compatible charging pads in its tables and Virgin Atlantic said it will offer the same in its airport lounges. Jay Z also announced a partnership with Duracell to bring that company's charging mats to several New York hotspots, including his own 40/40 club. Could Starbucks, McDonald's, 7-11 and Chucky Cheese be next? Not in 2013.

Why it won't happen in 2013: While many new phones this fall support the Qi wireless charging standard, Samsung and Qualcomm have loaned their support to the competing Alliance for Wireless Power (AW4P) standard. There's nothing like a standards war to make restaurant chains invest millions in upgrading their infrastructure to support half a dozen phones, none of which is an iPhone. Don't expect to see many more public places with wireless charging until Apple picks a standard and builds support into its products.

Nokia's Windows tablet

The speculation:?Two years have passed since Nokia has jumped off the "burning platform" of developing its own phone OS and fully embraced Windows Phone.?So what does former Microsoft exec Stephen Elop do for a follow-up? How about releasing a tablet.

After all, Elop said the following when speaking with analysts: "From an ecosystem perspective, there are benefits and synergies that exist between Windows and Windows Phone. We see that opportunity. We'll certainly consider those opportunities going forward." According to one popular rumor, the company plans to release a Windows RT slate with a battery-powered keyboard cover early in 2013. The tablet will allegedly come with wireless 4G service from carriers such as AT&T.

Why it won't happen in 2013: Nokia has had enough difficulty gaining market share in the smartphone space and, though things seem to be looking up for the Finnish company, its Devices and Services division lost 683 million Euros in Q3. Windows RT devices like the Microsoft?Surface are by no means a proven commodity, so Nokia would be jumping onto a whole new burning platform at a time when it needs to show stability and success. I think they'll pass.

Mobile payments become common

The speculation: If you have certain Sprint phones, today you can use Google Wallet to tap and pay at a handful of stores. On AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, you will soon be able to use a competing service called ISIS to turn your phone?into a credit card. With all this activity, you might expect that, in 2013, all the major stores would support mobile payments. Not so fast there, Ms. Kardashian.

Why it won't happen in 2013: You may see a few more stores add support for one or both payment standards, but many phones, including the iPhone, don't have the NFC chip necessary to support them. Even worse, consumers have few incentives to switch from old fashioned credit and debit cards. Forrester Research Analyst Denee Carrington recently told us that mobile payments won't catch on until at least 2015.

An Apple TV set

The speculation: Rumors of an Apple large-screen TV (aka the iTV) have been floating around for years. In late 2011, these rumors gained more credibility when Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs mentioned that the late Apple founder had plans for a TV set. In 2012, Apple CEO Tim Cook told NBC's Brian Williams that TV is "an area of intense interest" for his company. Now, many believe 2013 will be the year that Apple stops dropping hints and finally drop ships a product.

Why it won't happen in 2013: There's nothing stopping Apple from manufacturing an ordinary HDTV with iTunes and maybe some additional smart TV functions built-in. However, the company won't be content to ship that. It needs to partner with cable providers and TV networks, two very conservative groups, to offer a complete end-to-end service. It must also provide a better display than its competitors, perhaps an OLED screen that would push the price way up.

With the cable and display markets unlikely to change in the next 12 months, Apple will decide that it's better off pushing its services through an improved Apple TV set-top box, rather than getting into the TV business in 2013.

Self-driving cars

The speculation: Google has been working on a self-driving car for a couple of years now but it's not alone. Big automakers such as Ford, Cadillac and Volvo are developing their own autonomous vehicles. In the past two years, both Nevada and California have made the self-drivers street legal. Will we finally see someone selling them to the public in 2013? No.

Why it won't happen in 2013: Google's self-driving car technology is probably the closest to being ready, but the company is not an automaker and isn't likely to sell autos directly to the public. Even if one of the automakers felt it had a finished product, there are only a couple of states where drivers could use the car in its autonomous mode. With so much potential liability???just imagine the lawsuit if one of these cars caused an accident???we'll be reading about new testing and legal certifications for years before the first model hits a dealership.

Motorola Droid 5

The speculation: Motorola is the king of the keyboard slider, having launched the original Droid with keyboard and then releasing three different sequels. The company's most recent entry, the Droid 4, came out last February on Verizon and launched on Sprint as the Photon 4G this past summer. If Motorola plans to continue offering keyboarded phones, it will need to release a Droid 5 some time in early 2013.

Why it won't happen: The other leading phone vendors have moved?away from QWERTY phones in recent years, either giving up on them altogether or releasing them as under-featured budget phones such as the Samsung Stratosphere. Motorola's new owner Google hasn't put keyboards on its phones and, when the company launched its flagship devices this fall, it didn't even mention physical keyboards. Sadly, it looks like Motorola won't come out with another high-end keyboard slider.

BlackBerry PlayBook 2

The speculation:
BlackBerry's PlayBook was first released in 2011, an eternity in tablet years. With the company's new BlackBerry 10 OS coming in January, some speculate that RIM will update its slate. Though the old PlayBook is still for sale, it has ancient specs like a 1024-by-600 screen and a dated design.?If RIM wants to stay in this space, it needs to release a new model. A leaked roadmap even mentions a 10-inch PlayBook code named "Blackforest."

Why it won't happen in 2013: Though the company shipped a surprisingly-high 255,000 Playbooks in Q3 of 2012, the tablet?has never been a considered a success by anyone's standards. Meanwhile, RIM is losing market share in he smartphone space and needs to buckle down and focus on its core audience: smartphone users. If the company turns its fortunes around with BlackBerry 10 phones, we may see another tablet, but not in 2013.

A Facebook phone

The speculation:
For years, we've been hearing that Facebook would release a phone of its very own.?In 2011, HTC even released the super-lame Status, a budget phone with the Facebook logo on it and some added Facebook integration. Could Facebook be planning to enter the market with a truly revolutionary handset in 2013?

Why it won't happen?in 2013:??Back in July, Mark Zuckerberg himself said that creating a phone "wouldn't make sense." To be fair, companies sometimes deny working on products that later turn out to be very real. However, in this case, you should take Zuck at his word. There's no real selling point to a Facebook phone when every phone on the market has Facebook integration. By making its own phone, Facebook might even alienate some of its partners.

Flexible display phones or tablets

The speculation: CNET recently reported that Samsung Electronics will be showing off bendable displays at CES 2013. With the rumored Galaxy S IV phone expected to launch this spring and the inevitable Galaxy Note III, some believe we'll see the first phones to deploy this technology.

Why it won't happen in 2013: If Samsung's electronics division is first demoing the screen at CES 2013, it won't hit commercial products for at least another year. Also, in order for the phone itself to be flexible, the entire body must bend, something that may never happen. Samsung may use the flexible displays to create phones with slightly curved screens, but that won't happen in 2013.

More:??5 Things You Need to Know About the Samsung Galaxy S IV

Google Project Glass for consumers

The speculation:
Google's Project Glass augmented reality goggles will be available as a developers kit in early 2013. If developers get their hands on the product in January or February, a full-fledged product release can't be too far behind, right?

Why it won't happen in 2013: Google co-founder Sergey Brin told Bloomberg in June that he would like to have a consumer version of Project Glass "within a year" after releasing the kit to developers. While it's always possible that the kit will come out in January and the product will ship in December, it seems unlikely that such a unique product will make its way from prototype to final that quickly. Don't expect to get your headset until 2014.

finance: The Benefits Offered With Car Finance Lease UK

By Joey T Watson

Car leasing can provide drivers a series of benefits based on individual needs for transport. The leasing agreement usually lasts for 24 to 48 months and may be renewed at the end of this period. There are many reasons to consider agreements pertaining to the car finance lease UK.

The monthly payment is calculated according to the residual value of the vehicle including the depreciation and value at the end of the leasing agreement. This can prove highly beneficial as the retail value will not have to be paid. This means that you do not have to budget for exorbitant monthly repayments.

A contract is based on leasing a new vehicle or purchase the automobile on completion of an agreement. This option can prove cost effective as you will not have to seek a loan with enormous interest to obtain the necessary transportation. You will also be responsible for a lower monthly repayment as the asset is not purchased at retail value.

For those looking for transport on a budget, leasing can provide a solution. You will not have to be concerned with depreciation as this will be estimated and included in the costs. In many instances, you will also not have to save a large sum of money in order to make the deposit.

With the rate at which newer vehicles depreciate today, leasing allows one to drive the latest cars and upgrade according to the contract. This way you will not have to fork out large expenses attributed to depreciation. The vehicle leased will also be covered by a manufacturers warranty for the specified period.

There are maintenance packages one may add to keep the vehicle in optimum condition including genera wear and tear. Consider the range of benefits provided with a car finance lease UK. This includes the resale of assets and fluctuating interest rates with alternative financing.

UFC 155?s Derek Brunson was a cheerleader before he started fighting

Long before he put together a 9-2 record and earned a spot against Chris Leben at UFC 155, Derek Brunson was a cheerleader. As he shows in his audition video for "The Ultimate Fighter," Brunson was an accomplished tumbler and stunter. Skip to the 2:10 mark to see him toss his partner up into one-handed stunts and throw a double-twisting flip.

He talked about his cheerleading past with MMA Fighting, and pointed out how difficult cheerleading can be.

"I can do flips, and I was like tossing girls in the air. That's where I got my strength from, just controlling girls in the air. You get core strength, your chest gets all big. It makes you really strong, like you look on steroids, but you don't have to take steroids because of cheerleading."

Though Brunson wrestled in college, he said he did have scholarship offers for cheerleading. Wrestling and eventually MMA won out. Brunson admitted that MMA is more dangerous than cheerleading, but it's still tough.

"Cheerleading is definitely hard on your body. That's why I decided to wrestle in college, not cheerlead."

2013 Adult Beverage Trends - Food Product Design

CHICAGO?Beer, wine and spirits have long played a part in the American food and beverage scene. As we enter a new year, Technomic has identified the Top 10 adult beverage trends for 2013.

Major developments influencing adult beverage trends in 2013 are sweet wines like Moscota, including a range of sweet and medium red blends. Beer is expected to be seen in high-end restaurants, used to enhance the dining experience, as well as the increasing popularity of ciders, due to food-friendly flavor profiles and increased distribution and marketing support.

Unexpected flavors are on trend, from confectionery flavors in vodkas to Canadian whiskey's growing appeal to the younger adult and women demographics.

Insights reveal that in 2013, adult beverage retailing will take an upscale turn to a "bottle shop" concept, mixers are as important to mixed drinks as the actual alcohol content, cocktails and spirits on tap in bars and restaurants are growing in popularity and both outdoor and indoor beer gardens are expected to be booming. And in a time where everything is going digital, its no surprise that digital menus for wines, beers and spirits will continue to grow in popularity in 2013.

Eagles rally around embattled coach Andy Reid

By ROB MAADDI

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - From rookies to veterans, the Philadelphia Eagles fully support Andy Reid.

While many fans wanted him fired a long time ago and the media expects he'll be gone next week, Reid's players are firmly behind their embattled coach.

"I feel like Coach Reid will be here," LeSean McCoy said Thursday. "That's my mindset until I'm told otherwise. He's a great coach. I support him. I think he should stay here."

Almost to a man, other players expressed similar thoughts. That's a rarity these days in the NFL. Players are known to grumble about their coach, especially when a team isn't having much success and he's on the hot seat.

It's a different story in Philadelphia. In all corners of the locker room, the Eagles have Reid's back. You won't even find players complaining about him off the record, and no one has said he should go.

"If you look at Coach Reid's track record, the things he's been able to accomplish is going to be hard to top," Michael Vick said. "It takes a lot of hard work, a lot of commitment, and the one thing I can say is he committed himself to being the best coach that he could be and having his players in the best possible position week in and week out to try to win the games.

"You don't win them all and every good thing comes to an end. If that is the case, we don't know and the same thing for me, throughout it all I can say we stay confident, we had fun and we're going to try to go out and win this last one."

The Eagles (4-11) close out a dismal season at the New York Giants (8-7) on Sunday. For the second straight year, they began with high expectations only to fail miserably. It's a widespread assumption it will cost Reid his job.

Owner Jeffrey Lurie said before the season that another 8-8 finish would be "unacceptable." He also said "we need substantial improvement" for him to give Reid a contract extension. Reid, though, has one more year left on his deal for about $6 million.

"We really hope he's back next year," Jason Avant said.

Reid has won more games in 14 seasons than any coach in franchise history. With 140 victories, including playoffs, he's 22nd on the NFL career list. He's led the Eagles to nine playoff appearances, six division titles, five NFC championship games and one Super Bowl loss.

But his failure to win the franchise's first NFL title since 1960 is how he's measured in this football-crazed city.

"Andy had a hand in bringing everybody here in. Obviously, he put faith in us and had a lot of trust in us," said Cullen Jenkins, who had a heated exchange with Reid on the sideline during a preseason game. "We haven't been able to live up to the expectations of the coaches or the fans. We still have to try and give whatever else we can give right now. The only thing we can do is to try and get a win in the last game."

The Giants still have slim playoff hopes, so a victory send-off for Reid also would knock a division rival out of contention. Playing spoiler doesn't mean as much to the Eagles as winning one for their coach.

This already was a difficult year for Reid before the Eagles even played their first regular-season game. His oldest son, Garrett Reid, died during training camp after a long battle with drug addiction.

"Coach has given us so much," safety Kurt Coleman said. "To go through what he's gone through and to continue to fight for us, we're not going to stop fighting for him. That's not what's going to happen. We're going to prepare. We want to get this one bad. We really do. I don't want to say this is going to be his last game. I hope it's not so I just want to finish this season strong and hope for the best."

13 New Year's Resolutions Everyone Should Make

New Year's resolutions aren't only about self-improvement. Often, making a commitment to changing your behavior can help your family, friends and co-workers. To help you figure what New Year's resolutions will have the most impact, professors and other members of Washington University in St. Louis came up with 13 resolutions everyone should make this year.? Those resolutions are:

Learn something new

"Taking a class in a subject you enjoy is a great way to rekindle your love of learning," said Robert Wiltenburg, dean of?University College, the professional and continuing education division of Arts & Sciences at Washington University. "If you give yourself the freedom to explore new interests, you might uncover a passion that you never knew existed."

Walk in the park

"A quick walk in the park can do wonders to reduce stress and increase focus," said?Aaron Hipp, environmental health expert and assistant professor of social work at the university's Brown School. "Research has linked visiting parks to improvements in mood, concentration and positive feelings. People taking a walk in or even viewing a park report reduced feelings of depression, anxiety, anger and tension. A resolution to walk more and take advantage of local parks can contribute to a healthy, green year."

Volunteer

"Volunteering is good for your physical and mental health, as well as the local economy," said?Amanda Moore McBride, associate professor and associate dean for social work at the?Brown School?and director of the university?s Gephardt Institute for Public Service. ?Research links volunteering with improved overall well-being, and connections between people within a community correlates with strong economic indicators. Do everyone a favor this new year and volunteer."

Get your social media house in order

"We?re making choices without thinking about the way we?re building the world of new media," said?law professor Neil Richards, a privacy-law expert and author of the upcoming book "Intellectual Privacy," to be published by Oxford University Press in 2014. "But the choices we make now about the boundaries between our individual and social selves will have massive consequences for the societies our children and grandchildren inherit." ?

Rediscover the library

"A library card can be the most powerful item in your wallet, opening up vast resources that will enrich your life and give you access to more than you can imagine." said Jeffrey G. Trzeciak, university librarian.

Step away from your desk

"You learn to sit at school; you learn to sit at work. Get active like you used to be when you were a kid," said Debra Haire-Joshu, director of the?Obesity Prevention and Policy Research Center at the Brown School. "We can learn, then, to bring activity back into our daily life, just like we learned to take it out."

Pay down your credit card debt

"You may be tempted to pay off a smaller-debt account with a low APR because psychologically it feels gratifying to close an account. But the best way to reduce overall debt is to put extra money toward the loans with the highest interest rates," said?Cynthia Cryder?, assistant professor of marketing at?Olin Business School.

A few strategies to manage debt more effectively:

  • ?Consolidate several small debts into a few larger ones to eliminate the temptation of closing small accounts.
  • ?Pay attention to the actual dollars you are spending on interest.
  • ?Always put your money toward the debt with the higher interest rate.

Use your smartphone to quit smoking

"Smoking is both a physical addiction to nicotine and a learned psychological behavior, so the best way to quit is to attack it from both sides," said Sarah Shelton, manager of research and evaluation at the?Brown School?s Center for Public Health Systems Science.

Shelton adds that using nontraditional measures like smartphones in the fight against smoking can help greatly. In particular, smartphones can bring new forms of support to those looking to quit.?

Mind your health

Getting healthier in the new year can be as easy as making a few simple lifestyle changes, like committing to eating a healthy breakfast, paying attention to grocery?nutrition labels or sticking with a?consistent exercise?regimen.?

Kick the car habit

"Each gallon of gas we burn releases approximately 20 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere," said?Phil Valko, the university's director of sustainability. "With rising gas prices, rising sea levels and increasing traffic congestion, going car-free is a challenge that more and more individuals are interested in taking on."

Parents: Make every day count

"In order to be happy, well-adjusted children that grow into happy, well-adjusted adults, kids need happy, well-adjusted parents," said?Kelly Ross, an assistant professor in the Department of Newborn Medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine and a pediatric hospitalist at St. Louis Children?s Hospital.

Get more sleep

Proper sleep can promote better learning, memory and health, researchers have found. Additionally, getting more sleep helps to improve the ability to retain information and perform new tasks.???

Consume more culture

"By subscribing to a series, you?re telling the organization, 'I believe in what you do. Culture matters to me. I?m one of your people,'" said Charlie Robin, executive director of?Edison, the university?s professional performing arts showcase. "It identifies you as someone who is game for art, for entertainment and for edification. Don?t let weather, whining or whimsy counter your commitment to culture!"

Health care union members accuse Pa. chamber of "Scrooging" the ...

A group of union members took A Christmas Carol to the doorstep of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry in Harrisburg today. It wasn't a merry one.

Union members accused the chamber of putting its lobbying weight behind tax and budget cuts they say will amount to a stocking full of coal for middle class Americans who depend on Medicare for health care or who work in hospitals and nursing homes. The enacted a variation on Dickens' famous story and held up signs with statements including "Don't let your Medicare be Scrooged."

The demonstration echoed events being held around the county as Congress faces the "fiscal cliff" of federal spending cuts that will take place Jan. 1 unless Democrats and Republicans strike a deal that likely will require both spending cuts and tax increases.

The protesters were members of the Service Employees International Union, which has many members who work in health care facilities including hospital and nursing homes.

SEIU members said they want Congress to raise taxes on the richest two percent of Americans, and to enact no cuts to Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. They accused the chamber of protecting the interests of the rich, and acting against the interests of middle class Americans.

"I think it's unfortunate we take such crucial policy issues and reduce them to sophomoric pranks," said chamber President Gene Barr.?

He accused the SEIU of promoting an erroneous idea that the nation's debt and deficit crisis can be solved with higher taxes on the rich and no changes to programs such as Medicare. While he wouldn't specifically state that the chamber would accept higher taxes on the wealthy, he said "income and inequality are an issue" and "we are not opposed to more revenue."

Barr further said that while the chamber doesn't want to take away the Medicare or Social Security of anyone who is already eligible, it's necessary to raise the age when people can begin collecting benefits. "If we don't don't have a serious discussion about what the age should be, we will be in a fiscal pit forever," he said.

Most of the SEIU members were staffers and health care workers with union leadership roles. They were in Harrisburg for a regular SEIU meeting. One of the protestors was Brennan Mills of Harrisburg, who is a certified nurse assistant at a local nursing home. Mills, 65, said she fears changes to Social Security that will prevent her from retiring in the near future.

Scott Young, 56, works in the department that performs MRIs at Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College. He said Medicare cuts would hurt hospitals, and the impacts would include preventing hospitals from giving cost of living increases to employees including him. Most health care workers are in the middle class, and cuts would hurt their ability to spend money and fuel the economic recovery, he said.

Failure by Congress to reach an agreement before Jan. 1 will trigger $1.2 trillion in spending cuts over ten years, and expiration of the George W. Bush tax cuts affecting the middle class and the wealthy. The spending cuts would involve deep reductions to federal programs including defense and health care. Many experts believe it would have a devastating impact on the economy, leading to increased unemployment and recession.

New pickups are GM's biggest test since bankruptcy

PONTIAC, Mich (Reuters) - General Motors Co is counting on muscled up, more refined versions of its lucrative Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks to show investors and car buyers that the No. 1 U.S. automaker is back on track.

The 2014 model-year trucks are the most critical launch for the Detroit company since its bankruptcy and $50 billion U.S. taxpayer-funded bailout in 2009. The trucks are also a linchpin in GM's ongoing battle with No. 2 U.S. carmaker Ford Motor Co, whose F-150 truck is the industry's top-selling vehicle.

GM showed off the new full-size pickups in Pontiac, Michigan, on Thursday, and executives are touting the benefits of the vehicles, which will initially be offered in the most popular four-door, "crew cab" version in the second quarter of next year.

"There's nothing more core to our business than our trucks," GM North American President Mark Reuss said at the introduction at a movie studio north of Detroit.

"Our competitors may think that they have smooth sailing ahead, but let me tell you the weather is about to change," he said, adding the goal was to beat Ford's F-Series.

GM better hope so. Analysts estimated the company has invested $3 billion to $4 billion on developing the new trucks and related engines, as well revamping the plants where they are built.

Their reception on Wall Street will also be closely watched by officials at the U.S. Treasury, which still owns about 26 percent of GM. The fate of that stake has been the subject of much speculation, with analysts suggesting divestiture might occur closer to the trucks' launch next year.

This week, Treasury sold the rest of its position in American International Group Inc, which also got a federal bailout.

The current versions of the big trucks and related SUVs generate profits of $12,000 or more per vehicle and account for about 60 percent of GM's global profit, analysts said. Citi has estimated the new models could bring the automaker more than $1 billion in additional operating earnings in 2013 and 2014.

That would be welcome, since the last major redesign of the trucks was in 2006, and delays caused by GM's bankruptcy in 2009 has put it at a competitive disadvantage in a segment that accounts for about 11 percent of the market, analysts said.

GM noted that the average age of big pickups on U.S. roads is more than 10-1/2 years, and the need to replace aging vehicles means plenty of room for sales growth.

GM's Reuss did not provide sales projections for the new trucks, but said they would attract new buyers and demand would be there as the U.S. housing market improves. "We're timing this very, very well in terms of construction and growth in the economy."

LMC Automotive analyst Jeff Schuster cited new features on the trucks, a drastically improved vehicle interior and reduced noise in the cabin as reasons they would likely sell well.

"They have created a much more competitive truck," he said, adding that the big challenge now is pulling off the transition from the current model and properly launching the new pickups and SUVs. GM's inventory of large pickups surged in November as it was caught off guard by aggressive deals by rivals.

GM's U.S. dealers are champing at the bit for the new trucks, saying the interior design is a big step forward from the current models. They say the new design will make the automaker more of a player, especially at the top end of the market, where prices approach $60,000 and margins are high.

"Us having a class-leading truck is critically important to the success of Chevrolet," said Jason Brickl, chief executive of Ballweg Chevrolet in Wisconsin, whose two dealerships in the Madison area get about one-quarter of sales from the Silverado.

GM said its 2014 trucks will be new "from hood to hitch," including a trio of new V6 and V8 engines meant to improve power, torque and efficiency. GM also touted a quieter, more comfortable cab; improved steering, suspension and brakes; and the use of more high-strength steel. New safety features will include forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and front and rear parking assist.

The company said horsepower, torque and EPA fuel economy estimates won't be available until early next year, but said the new trucks will outperform the current models.

GM has not announced pricing for the new trucks.

The current Silverado has a starting price of about $24,000, rising to almost $44,000, and the most expensive Sierra's price tag is around $57,000. Ford's F-150 starts under $24,000 and runs to almost $54,000.

GM's big trucks and SUVs - Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade - remain top draws at dealerships. Their combined U.S. sales rose 11 percent last year to more than 799,000 vehicles.

The redesigned SUVs will debut in 2014, followed by new versions of the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon midsized pickups in late 2014, Reuss said.

GM's pickup truck sales fell in November, with the automaker blaming aggressive discounting by rivals Ford, Chrysler and Nissan. GM has added new incentives for the trucks for December, and executives indicated they will cut production to reduce supplies.

Reuss said pickup truck sales were "much better" so far this month, and inventory would end the year close to company targets. GM ended November with 139 days worth of pickups and had said it would miss its year-end target of having U.S. inventory of no more than 220,000 pickup trucks, or 85 days of supply.

In a positive sign for the truck market, however, Citi analyst Itay Michaeli expects U.S. demand for full-size trucks to meaningfully outperform the overall industry in the next 12 to 18 months as consumers move to replacing aging vehicles.

LMC Automotive expects total U.S. sales of full-size pickup trucks this year to rise 8.4 percent to more than 1.62 million vehicles and hit more than 1.8 million in 2019. It sees GM's combined pickup sales topping Ford's next year and holding that lead through 2019.

Officials at Ford said the company is happy with F-150's lead over Silverado. The F-150 was last redesigned in 2008.

"We're very pleased with the performance of our pickup truck over the years," Ford U.S. sales analyst Erich Merkle said. "It's been the best-selling pickup in America for 35 years straight."

Meanwhile, GM will stick with its strategy of offering both full-size and midsized pickups as a way to satisfy more consumers. Ford and Chrysler have discontinued their midsized trucks.

Official: Syria fires Scud missiles at rebels

(AP) ? Syrian government forces have fired Scud missiles at insurgents in recent days, escalating the 2-year-old conflict against rebels seeking to overthrow the regime, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, two officials said forces of President Bashar Assad have fired the missiles from the Damascus area into northern Syria. These officials asked not to be named because they weren't authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

News of the missiles came on the same day that more than 100 countries, including the United States, recognized a new Syrian opposition coalition. That has further isolated Assad's regime and opened a way for greater humanitarian assistance to the forces battling to oust him.

One official said there was no indication that chemical weapons were aboard the missiles. Officials have said over the past week that they feared rebel advances were prompting Assad to consider using chemical weapons.

This official estimated that the number of Scuds fired was more than a half dozen, confirming details first reported by The New York Times.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Assad has fired missiles, but wouldn't specify what kind.

"As the regime becomes more and more desperate, we see it resorting to increased lethality and more vicious weapons moving forward and we have in recent days seen missiles deployed," she said.

White House press secretary Jay Carney, speaking to reporters, said he could not confirm the report, but said if true it would be a sign of desperation.

"The idea that the Syrian regime would launch missiles, within its borders, at its own people, is stunning, desperate and a completely disproportionate military escalation," Carney said.

In Brussels, a NATO official confirmed that the alliance's intelligence indicates the missiles were Scud-type missiles.

"Allied intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets have detected the launch of a number of unguided, short-range ballistic missiles inside Syria this week," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters. "We do not know the details of the missiles but trajectory and distance travelled indicate they were Scud-type missiles."

"The missiles were fired from inside Syria and they impacted inside Syria. No missiles hit Turkish territory. We have no information about possible casualties or damage," added the official.

The new development happened as officials planned an international conference to further assist opposition to Assad.

"This is the usual pattern of behavior that whenever there is an important decision that is anti-Assad taken by the international community, the Assad regime escalates the degree of violence to show its degree of displeasure," said Murhaf Jouejati, a specialist on Syrian affairs at the National Defense University. "Like saying, 'Oh, yeah? I'll show you!' "

Yemeni president in standoff with Saleh son over Scud missiles

SANAA (Reuters) - The commander of Yemen's Republican Guards has refused orders from the president to hand long-range missiles over to the Defence Ministry, political sources said, raising the risk of a showdown between the country's two most powerful figures.

The standoff between Brigadier General Ahmed Saleh, son of ousted former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, and President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi could delay an overhaul of armed forces that split last year during a mass uprising, worsening disorder.

Restoring security in Yemen is a priority for the United States and Gulf allies because al Qaeda militants are entrenched in parts of the country, posing a potential threat to top oil exporter Saudi Arabia next door and nearby shipping lanes.

"Brigadier General Ahmed Ali Abdullah Saleh rejected the president's instructions to hand over Scud missile formations in the possession of the Republican Guards to the Defence Ministry," a presidential palace source told Reuters.

"This has caused a crisis between the two sides."

A second presidential palace source confirmed this information and added: "The president was so angry at the rejection of his orders and threatened to revoke the immunity given to the former president and expose corruption worth billions of rials in the armed forces."

The Republican Guards, the best equipped wing of the Yemeni armed forces, have been seen as crucial to containing al Qaeda.

Hadi, elected in February for a two-year interim period with a mandate to restructure the military, has been gradually trying to loosen the Saleh family's grip on the armed forces in a country where the former president's legacy still looms large.

U.S. INFORMED OF STAND-OFF

Revamping the armed forces, which entails removing powerful relatives of Saleh from key positions, is a pivotal part of a U.S.-backed power transfer deal signed in Saudi Arabia that brought Hadi to power and aims to hold the country together.

The sources said Hadi had discussed the Scud dispute with senior U.S. officials, including Assistant Secretary of State Andrew Shapiro and General James Mattis, chief of the U.S. Central Command, at a meeting in the capital Sanaa on Monday.

Officials at Ahmed Saleh's office were not available for comment. But his father's press secretary said the threats made by Hadi violate the terms of the power transfer deal signed in Saudi Arabia last year which granted the ex-president immunity from prosecution for any crimes committed during his rule.

"The comments attributed to President Hadi are serious and contradict the political settlement accord which was prepared by Gulf Arab states and backed by U.N. Security Council members and the European Union," Ahmed al-Soufi said in a statement.

A leader in Saleh's General People's Congress party said that it inquired about the comments attributed to Hadi and were told that they were inaccurate.

The pro-Saleh al-Yaman al-Youm newspaper quoted Hadi as saying that what he meant was that no immunity would be granted to anyone who carries out any sabotage action in Yemen.

"I did not mean any person in particular and certainly not the immunity granted by parliament in line with the political settlement," the Arabic language daily quoted Hadi as saying.

In April, Hadi removed about 20 top commanders, including a half brother of Saleh and other relatives.

In August, he began chipping away at General Ahmed's power base by transferring units from the Republican Guards to a new force under his command or under different regional commands.
