This tiny device, implanted under the skin, could be useful in treating many diseases that require taking medication regularly, scientists reported February 16 at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

?This opens up profound possibilities for improving the treatment of patients and the potential of telemedicine,? said Robert Farra, president of MicroCHIPS Inc., the company that funded and conducted part of the study. A paper describing the results was also published online February 16 in Science Translational Medicine by collaborators from MicroCHIPS, MIT, Harvard and Case Western University.

The idea behind a microchip that could release chemicals in the body at precise times was first developed by MIT scientists over a decade ago. But researchers needed to make sure that medications were well stored in the device. Also, the immune system tends to create a barrier of collagen around implanted devices, which could make it difficult for the drug to make it into the bloodstream.

In the new study, a device with individual doses of the drug teriparatide sealed inside was implanted under the waistline in eight women with osteoporosis. When the device?s microprocessor receives a wireless signal, a current runs through the microchip, breaking open the metal layers that contain a single dose of the drug.

About two months after the device was implanted ? and after the immune system?s protective barrier had formed ? wireless signals programmed the device to release daily doses of teriparatide. The drug, which increases bone mass, is usually given by injection.

Based on blood tests, the doses from the device appeared to bump up levels of a molecule called P1NP, which indicates bone building ? evidence that teriparatide released from the microchip works as it should.

Still, there are technical limitations with this device. James Watson, a researcher in Bioengineering at University of California, San Diego, said that the consistency of the devices is a concern. One device didn?t release any medication in one of the original patients.

No side effects appeared in any of the study participants, Farra said. What?s more, many patients said they weren?t bothered by the device or had, in fact, forgotten about it.

Explosive evolution need not follow mass extinctions, study of ancient zooplankton finds

ScienceDaily (Feb. 13, 2012) ? In the wake of a mass extinction like the one that occurred 445 million years ago, a common assumption is that surviving species tend to proliferate quickly into new forms, having outlived many of their competitors.

But new research shows that tiny marine organisms called graptoloids did not begin to rapidly develop new physical traits until about 2 million years after competing species became extinct.

The discovery challenges the idea that explosive evolution quickly follows mass extinctions. In the absence of competition, the common theory goes, surviving species hurry to adapt, evolving new physical attributes to take advantage of newly opened niches in the ecosystem. But that's not what researchers found in the fossil record of graptoloid evolution.

"What we found is more consistent with a different theory, which says you might expect an evolutionary lag as the ecosystem reforms itself and new interspecies relationships form," said University at Buffalo geology professor Charles E. Mitchell, who led the research.

The research provides insight on how a new mass extinction, possibly one resulting from human-made problems such as deforestation and climate change, might affect life on Earth today.

"How would it affect today's plankton? How would it affect groups of organisms in general?" asked the paper's lead author, David W. Bapst, a PhD candidate at the University of Chicago, who studied with Mitchell as an undergraduate.

"The general motivation behind this work is understanding how extinction and evolution of form relate to each other, and the fossil record is the only place where we can do these sort of experiments across long spans of time," Bapst said.

The research on graptoloids is scheduled to appear the week of February 13 in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Other team members included Peter C. Bullock and Michael J. Melchin of St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, and H. David Sheets of Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. The National Science Foundation and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada supported the study.

Research turns up unexpected results

Graptoloids are an extinct zooplankton that lived in colonies. Because the animals evolved quickly and had a wide geographic range, their fossil record is rich -- a trove of information on how species diversify.

Bapst, Mitchell and their colleagues examined two different groups of graptoloids in their study: neograptines and diplograptines. Each kind lived during the Ordovician mass extinction that began about 445 million years ago, but only neograptines survived.

Before the extinction event, diplograptine species were dominant, outnumbering neograptine species. Diplograptines also varied more in their morphology, building colonies of many different shapes.

With diplograptines gone after the Ordovician mass extinction, neograptines had a chance to recover in an environment free of competitors.

According to the popular ecological release hypothesis, these circumstances should have led to a burst of adaptive radiation. In other words, without competition, the neograptines should have diversified rapidly, developing new physical traits -- new colonial architectures -- to take advantage of ecological niches that the diplograptines once filled.

But that's not what the researchers found.

Finding causes behind evolutionary lag

To test the adaptive radiation idea, they analyzed the colony forms of 183 neograptine and diplograptine species that lived before, during or after the Ordovician mass extinction -- a total of 9 million years of graptoloid history.

This wealth of data enabled the team to track graptoloid evolution with more precision than past studies could. What the researchers discovered looked nothing like adaptive radiation.

Almost immediately following the Ordovician mass extinction, new neograptine species proliferated, as expected. But according to the study, these new species displayed only small changes in form or morphology, not the burst of innovation the release hypothesis predicts. In fact, graptoloids had been evolving new physical traits at a more intensive pace before the extinction event.

Limited morphological innovation among neograptines continued for approximately 2 million years after the extinction, Bapst said.

The lag supports a type of evolution that argues that interactions between co-evolving species help foster diversification. Because such relationships likely take time to develop in a recovering ecosystem, an evolutionary lag of the kind the graptoloid study detected should occur in the wake of a mass extinction.

Another possible explanation is that newly appeared graptoloid species may have differed in ways outside of physical traits, a phenomenon that biologists refer to as non-adaptive radiations. A third possibility is that graptoloids may have experienced evolutionary lag due to their complex mode of growth.

Besides investigating how neograptines fared after the extinction event, the team also analyzed whether colony form alone could explain why neograptines survived the mass extinction while diplograptines disappeared. The scientists concluded that this was unlikely, suggesting a role for other factors such as possible differences in the preferred habitat of the two groups.

The $49.99 Pantech Burst is the first smartphone?on AT&T's 4G LTE network to debut with a sub-$100 price tag. What it lacks in wow factor compared to our current Editors' Choice, the gargantuan Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket?(4.5 stars, $199.99), it makes up for with a great balance between price and performance. But even on its own, the Pantech Burst is a solid smartphone for users looking to tap into AT&T's 4G LTE network on a budget.

Design, Call Quality, and LTE
The Burst measures 5.0 by 2.5 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.3 ounces. It's made entirely of smooth, shiny plastic, embellished with a wood grain-like appearance. We tested the red version, but it's also available in a dark gray. The 4-inch 800-by-480-pixel resolution Super AMOLED display looks bright and rich. I noticed some stippling because of the PenTile subpixel layout, but it was minor and didn't bother me. The phone is more comfortable to hold and use than the huge Skyrocket, especially if you have smaller hands. The onscreen QWERTY keyboard felt fine and the four haptic feedback-enabled touch keys beneath the display are responsive.

The Burst is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), tri-band HSPA+ 21 (850/1900/2100 MHz), and dual-band LTE (700/1700 MHz) device. It also has 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and works as a Wi-Fi hotspot to connect up to 8 devices with the appropriate plan. Voice quality is solid. Voices sound rich and full in the phone's earpiece. Calls made with the phone sound clear, with good noise cancellation, though there's just a touch of echo. Calls sounded good through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars) and voice dialing worked fine over Bluetooth. The speakerphone sounds fine, but doesn't go loud enough to use outdoors. Battery life was disappointing, at just 4 hours and 44 minutes of continuous talk time.

LTE is the biggest draw here. AT&T is still in the early stages of LTE deployment; it's currently available in 26 U.S. cities and covers 74 million users. When not in an LTE area, the Burst will connect to AT&T's HSPA+ 21 network.

I tested the Burst in New York City against the Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket. Compared with the Skyrocket in a number of head-to-head speeds tests, the Burst often fell behind. The Skyrocket reported speeds at least 1Mbps faster than the Burst, both up and down. Speeds were still good across the board, at an average of 5Mbps down and 3Mbps up on the Burst, so you shouldn't feel this difference too much for general Web browsing. But if you're looking to make the most of LTE, the Burst comes up short.

User Interface, Multimedia, and Conclusions
The Burst is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8060 processor, running Android Gingerbread 2.3.5. Pantech has said that the Burst will receive an upgrade to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) eventually, but hasn't revealed a timeline. Benchmark scores were excellent, so the Burst shouldn't have trouble handling any of the apps or high-end games you can throw at it, including most of the apps available in the Android Market.

There are seven home screens you can customize and swipe between. AT&T has preloaded a fair share of bloatware, but no more than we're accustomed to seeing. Pantech's UI layer looks nice, though it won't please fans of stock Android. I really like multi-option lock screen, which allows you quick access to the phone's browser, call log, email, music player, or text messages.

The Burst comes with a spacious 12.3GB of free internal memory. There's also a microSD card underneath the battery cover, and you have to remove the phone's battery in order to access it. My 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine.

Music tracks sounded good over wired headphones as well as?Altec Lansing BackBeat?Bluetooth headphones ($99.99, 3.5 stars). I was able to listen to AAC, MP3, OGG, WAV, and WMA files, but not FLAC.? AT&T may not have a ton of LTE smartphones yet, but they're coming. For now, though, the Pantech Burst is a good choice for users looking to tap into the carrier's emerging network on a budget. But better options emerge when you increase your budget. For $50 more, the bulky HTC Vivid?($99.99, 4 stars) gets you a bigger, higher-res display and a nicer camera. The Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket remains our favorite LTE phone on AT&T. It features a larger display, better camera, longer battery life, and faster LTE data speeds than the Burst.

Miss high court hears challenge to Barbour pardons (AP)

JACKSON, Miss. ? Feuding attorneys asked the Mississippi Supreme Court on Thursday to determine the validity of pardons that Haley Barbour gave to convicted killers and other convicts during his final days as governor.

Justices could uphold the pardons, as requested by a private attorney representing Republican Barbour. Or they could declare the pardons invalid, as requested by Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood. If they agree with Hood that the 30-day publication is a must, they could send the pardons back to a lower court, where a circuit judge could hold a trial to determine whether the pardons met those requirements.

Hood contends that if ads weren't run in daily papers every day for 30 days, or weekly newspapers once a week for five weeks, the pardons aren't valid.

"It's a constitutional right of the people to have that notice," Hood told the nine justices Thursday during more than three hours of oral arguments.

Barbour, who once considered a 2012 White House run, was limited to two terms as governor. He pardoned 198 people before finishing his second term Jan. 10, including four convicted murderers and a robber who worked as trusties at the Governor's Mansion. His actions outraged victims' families.

Most of the people he pardoned were already out of prison, and some had finished serving their sentences decades ago. The five trusties were released from custody before Hood filed a lawsuit challenging the pardons. A circuit judge granted Hood's request for a temporary restraining order that blocked the release of five other convicted felons who received pardons, and they remain in prison pending the outcome of the legal battle.

Barbour was not in the courtroom during Thursday's arguments, nor were the five former trusties, one of whom has gone to Wyoming.

Several relatives of people killed by the pardoned trusties were in the courtroom. Mary McAbee, whose brother was slain, said afterward that she's praying that the justices "will listen and have their hearts open" to God.

Waller admonished attorneys at the beginning of the hearing to focus their arguments narrowly on the legal questions at hand.

"I don't want any political sound bites. I don't want any jury arguments. No grandstanding. No sniping. Everybody understand?" Waller said. The nine justices are elected in nonpartisan contests.

Attorney Thomas Fortner, who represents four of the former trusties, said past cases suggest pardons are not reviewable by the courts.

"The governor, as the chief executive, is granted the power to pardon and is the judge of the propriety of the publication," Fortner said. "The constitution does not give the power to anybody to review that."

Charles Griffin, an attorney for Barbour, also said the pardons are not reviewable.

"This case is not about Haley Barbour. This case is not about General Hood. And this case is not about the individuals who have received pardons. This case is about the separation of powers under the Mississippi Constitution," Griffin said.

By intervening, the court would be "getting into the deliberative process that the constitution gives to the governor," Griffin said.

Barbour has said he's at peace with the pardons because his Christian faith teaches about redemption. He has accused Hood of challenging the pardons for partisan political reasons.

Although the arguments Thursday were only about the 10 inmates who were in custody when pardoned, those who received pardons after being out for years could lose their chance to have their rights restored, including their rights to vote and to buy firearms.

Hood has said the proper public notice was provided in the cases of only about two dozen of those pardoned. None of the former Governor's Mansion trusties met the requirement, he said.

Barbour also granted medical release and conditional clemency to some inmates, but they weren't required to give public notice of their release.

Waller asked Hood whether people pardoned by past governors had met the 30 days' publication requirement. Hood said he didn't know the history of every governor, but he had a document showing the actions of Bill Waller Sr., the chief justice's father, who served as governor from 1972 to 1976.

A document provided by Hood's office shows Gov. Waller on May 28, 1974, issued a document to correct the paperwork on a pardon originally issued by his predecessor, Gov. John Bell Williams, in 1967. The document from Gov. Waller notes that under Williams, the person seeking the pardon did not give 30 days' notice. It says that by May 1974: "Subject has complied with the provisions of Section 124, Article 5, Mississippi Constitution of 1890 by publishing his petition for the pardon for the time and manner provided thereby."

The justices questioned Hood about the role that one of his staff attorneys had in advising Barbour's staff about the pardons. The question is whether that role disqualifies Hood from arguing against the pardons.

Hood said Barbour's legal filings are "trying to mislead the court" about the role of assistant attorney general David Scott, who is assigned to do legal work for the state Department of Corrections. Barbour has included text messages in court records between Scott and a Barbour assistant in which they discuss the publication statute.

"The governor can't shirk the duty and blame it on someone else no matter who it is," Hood said.

'Undercover' lessons surface for female CEOs

The CEO?s waterworks probably made the boys in the boardroom wince.

After all, the ?guys on my team? had previously asked Dina Dwyer-Owens not to cry during speeches, she said. But when she listened to a female employee?s sob story in front of the ?Undercover Boss? cameras, she wept in prime time, in front of 9 million viewers.

?I thought I?d get bashed around about that,? Dwyer-Owens said with a laugh, referring to her teary moment on the Jan. 22 episode of the CBS program.

After some reflection, however, that brief bit of bawling became one of the dry-eyed lessons, Dwyer-Owens ? chairwoman and CEO of the Dwyer Group in Waco, Texas ? learned toiling on her company?s front lines, disguised in a black wig and ball cap.

Lesson One: a female boss can shed an occasional tear and not lose her authority. In fact, Dwyer-Owens said, all CEOs, whatever their gender, should remain true to what they feel and how they express their sensitive sides.

?I decided, I?m not going to apologize for it,? said Dwyer-Owens, whose late father, Don, founded the Dwyer Group, a holding company for hundreds of home-service and home-repair franchises under names including Mr. Rooter, Mr. Appliance and Mr. Electric. ?I got my work ethic from my dad and my emotions from my mom. When I?m moved by something, I tear up. It?s just who I am. To pretend I?m not is just a lie.

?Sometimes we, as women (CEOs), try to be somebody we?re not,? Dwyer-Owens added. ?We think we have to have a certain fa?ade for the men in the room.?

Of course, ?Undercover Boss? is all about facades. The show?s producers put selected CEOs in disguise, then send them to work temporarily with unsuspecting, ground-level employees. The program has featured 34 CEOs. Only three of whom have been women.

Dwyer-Owens? friend, Shelly Sun ? co-founder and CEO of BrightStar Care ? became the second woman profiled by the show last April. Sun said she collected fresh wisdom as a high-powered mother balancing work and family.

?My perspective may be unique in terms of how hard it was to be away from my boys for 10 days during filming,? Sun said. Her company, based in Gurnee, Ill., helps older parents and grandparents remain in their homes with professional assistance.

?While I hate being away from (my young boys), I know they ? got to see how our company takes care of people in a way that I couldn't describe,? Sun said. ?Ever since (it aired), they do not mind as much how hard I work and how often I travel.?

?Shelly?s got the same determination I have,? Dwyer-Owens said. ?Nobody?s going to stop us. If there?s something in life you?re really passionate about but you?re afraid to do, don?t stop. It may take years to get there, but don?t give up.?

That was the second lesson Dwyer-Owens plucked from her TV exposure ? especially after hearing firsthand how tricky it is for one of her female employees to juggle a job, family and household budget. (That?s what prompted the CEO?s tears). Dwyer-Owens is married with two children.

The first female CEO to appear on ?Undercover Boss? was Kimberly K. Schaefer, who heads Great Wolf Resorts. Based in Madison, Wis., Great Wolf operates a chain of indoor water parks. Her episode was broadcast in 2010. And while Schaefer is a working mom, she told Forbes magazine that same year: ?I try not to differentiate myself from my male CEO counterparts.?

When msnbc.com asked Schaefer what enlightenment she had gained while incognito, she stayed gender neutral: ?One adjustment I?ve made is to take a step back and learn a bit from others. ? Try working in a department for a week. After a while, employees will be more comfortable to share their ideas.?

That echoes the third lesson Dwyer-Owens gleaned: ?I?m going to hear the truth in what people are saying and be honest with myself about it.? But the seeds of that foresight were originally sown in 1999, Dwyer-Owens said, when she was promoted at age 35 to acting CEO. After the move was announced, her plumbing franchisees took a straw poll and voted her out.

?They didn?t think I had (what it took to lead). It was due to age and gender,? Dwyer-Owens recalled. ?I met with the leader of the group and asked for six months to prove I was the right person. If I wasn?t, I was going to be the first person to walk away.?

The plumbers relented. And when the undercover CEO saw one of her female employees thriving in the male-dominated trades industry, it only reinforced her fourth and final lesson.

?Women shouldn?t sit there and be a victim (and blame their gender). That just drives me crazy,? Dwyer-Owens said. ?That sounds like kids crying. I realize there are some challenges. But I don?t know that women always take the initiative (to overcome those challenges in the workplace).

?Quit listening to the reasons why you can?t do it and look at the reasons why you can.?
