Sony's 3D Experience channel tops 10 million views, some people like the extra dimension

Since kicking off its free 3D Experience channel, Sony has managed to notch up 10 million viewers in just short of six months. The channel offers up samples of music, movies, sports and documentaries for free, in an effort to tempt viewers into ponying up cash for the full experience. The channel, available on its Bravia 3DTV range and Blu-ray players, has now expanded from its five initial launch countries to 60. It's currently offering tastes of forthcoming Sony titles like The Amazing Spiderman and content from last year's World Cup, with a total of around 100 free snippets to peruse on the Japanese iteration of the channel. You hear Sony well up with pride in the PR below. Well, it's had a pretty tough time recently.

A systematic review and meta-analysis carried out by researchers at the University of Exeter Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (PCMD) has found that differences in systolic blood pressure between arms could be a useful indicator of the likelihood of vascular risk and death.

The findings add support to the calls for both-arm blood pressure checks to be performed as standard.

The review is published in The Lancet online today (30th January) and the study is supported by the Royal College of General Practitioners, the South West GP Trust and the National Institute for Health Research Peninsula Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care.

The study reviewed 28 papers covering difference in systolic blood pressure between arms. It found significant evidence to suggest that a difference of 15mm Hg or more was associated with increased risk of: peripheral vascular disease (the narrowing and hardening of the arteries that supply blood to the legs and feet); pre-existing cerebrovascular disease (affecting the blood supply to the brain and often associated with cognitive issues such as dementia); and mortality, both as a result of cardiovascular problems and generally.

The risk of peripheral vascular disease was also increased at a difference of 10mm Hg or more.

The findings further support the need for both-arm blood pressure checks to be the norm not least because most cases are 'clinically silent' and such checks would better identify those at risk.

Dr. Christopher Clark, Clinical Academic Fellow at PCMD and a GP in Witheridge, Devon, led the study. He said: "We set out to investigate whether there was an association between differences in systolic blood pressure between arms and vascular disease and mortality. Our findings indicate a strong association, and that differences of 10mm Hg or 15mm Hg or more might help to identify patients who are at risk and who need further vascular assessment. More research is required in order to transfer our findings to clinical practice, but in the meanwhile we will be flagging the results of our review to the UK Vascular Check programme."

29 Chinese missing after militant attack in Sudan

(AP) ? Militants apparently captured 29 Chinese workers after attacking a remote worksite in a volatile region of Sudan, and Sudanese forces were increasing security for Chinese projects and personnel there, China said Sunday.

China has close political and economic relations with Sudan, especially in the energy sector.

The Foreign Ministry in Beijing said the militants attacked Saturday and Sudanese forces launched a rescue mission Sunday in coordination with the Chinese embassy in Khartoum.

The Ministry's head of consular affairs met with the Sudanese ambassador in Beijing and "urged him to actively conduct rescue missions under the prerequisite of ensuring the safety of the Chinese personnel," the statement said.

In Khartoum, a Chinese embassy spokesman said the northern branch of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement announced that 29 Chinese workers had been captured in the attack. The spokesman, who asked not be identified, gave no other details and it wasn't clear if the militants had demanded conditions for their return.

Other details weren't given. The official Xinhua News Agency cited the state governor as saying the Sudan People's Liberation Movement attacked a road-building site in South Kordofan and seized the workers.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement are a guerrilla force that has fought against Sudan's regime. Its members hail from a minority ethnic group now in control of much of South Sudan, which became the world's newest country only six months ago in a breakaway from Sudan.

Sudan has accused South Sudan of arming pro-South Sudan groups in South Kordofan. The government of South Sudan has called such accusations a smoke screen intended to justify a future invasion of the South.

China has sent large numbers of workers to potentially unstable regions such as Sudan and last year was forced to send ships and planes to help with the emergency evacuation of 30,000 of its citizens from the fighting in Libya.

China has consistently used its clout in diplomatic forums such as the United Nations to defend Sudan and its longtime leader Omar al-Bashir. In recent years, it has also sought to build good relations with leaders from the south, where most of Sudan's oil is located.

Chinese companies have also invested heavily in Sudanese oil production, along with companies India and elsewhere.

Senegal's president cleared to run for 3rd term

(AP) ? Senegal's highest court ruled Friday that the country's increasingly frail, 85-year-old president could run for a third term in next month's election, a deep blow to the country's opposition which has vowed to take to the streets if the aging leader does not step aside.

Minutes after the court's verdict, police opened fire with tear gas to disperse hundreds of young men who had gathered at a downtown roundabout. Protesters hid in side streets. In groups of five and six, they ran back out to lob rocks at police. In several other neighborhoods, demonstrators dragged wooden market tables into intersections and set them on fire.

The legality of President Abdoulaye Wade's candidacy is bitterly disputed because the constitution was revised soon after he assumed office in 2000 in order to impose a two-term limit. Wade argues the new law should not apply to him since he was elected before it took effect.

The court deliberated behind closed doors for hours before emerging and issuing a list of 14 approved candidates, including Wade. Senegalese pop star Youssou Ndour, arguably Africa's most famous musician, was not on the list ? another blow to the opposition, which had hoped that Ndour's candidacy would shine an international spotlight on the race.

Since early afternoon, hundreds of youths carrying cardboard signs calling for Wade's departure milled around a downtown square, where they vowed to spend the night in protest if the court approved the leader's candidacy.

Police wearing fiberglass helmets took up positions at strategic intersections in the capital. Businesses sent their employees home. Schools sent notes to parents asking them to pick up their children early.

A lawyer by training with multiple degrees from universities in France, Wade spent 25 years as the country's opposition leader. He ran and lost four elections before his victory in the election 11 years ago, hailed as a breakthrough for democracy on a continent better known for strongman rule. Former President Abdou Diouf stunned the world by calling Wade to concede defeat, a gesture unheard of in the region. Now many are wondering if Wade himself will step aside gracefully.

Since taking office, he has come under mounting criticism, first for delegating an increasing share of power to his son, as well as for the corruption scandals that have overshadowed his administration's achievements, including the building of numerous roads and bridges.

After winning a second term in 2007, Wade told reporters he would not seek a third term. He then reversed course, arguing that the term limits were imposed after he was elected, and that no law can be applied retroactively.

"I'm a lawyer too. And the constitution, it's me that revised it. All by myself. No one knows it better than me ... No one can interpret it better than me," Wade told the news portal Dakaractu.Com in an interview this week. "I was elected in 2000 on the basis of a law dating from 1963. After I was elected, I saw to it that a new constitution was adopted. Everyone knows that a law dictates the present and the future, but it cannot be retroactive."

Late Friday, Wade addressed the nation. "Let us stop with this show of bad temper which leads to nothing," he said according to the state-owned news agency. "I did not ask for anything except the law. And the law is what was expressed."

Senegal is considered one of the most mature democracies in Africa, and unlike many of its neighbors, its democratic tradition dates to even before independence from France 51 years ago. Starting in the mid-1800s, France allowed its colony to elect a deputy who served in the French parliament.

And in his official biography, Wade traces his roots to the Cayor kingdom located in Senegal's central plains, where kings were elected by a circle of elders rather than through a hereditary system common in many other parts of Africa.

"What shocks people is that he would try to run for a third term," said the country's leading investigative journalist Abdou Latif Coulibaly, the editor-in-chief of The Gazette magazine who voted for Wade in 2000 but who is now supporting the opposition. "It's the problem of his age. It's the problem of the constitution. And to be frank, people are very scared that he will try to hand power to his son ? which is something that the population does not want at all."

Hours before the court was due to release its verdict, Pape Sy circled the city looking for an open gas station. For three days, a fuel strike had closed down gas stations, adding yet another point of applied pressure. Finally in the Medina neighborhood of the capital, he pulled in behind the 13 other cars lined up head-to-toe at a Total station, which had just reopened. His gasoline gauge had already dipped below 0.

"Things don't smell good," he said, summing up the mood in the capital. "There are economic problems, and these other issues are attaching themselves onto that like pieces of Scotch tape. People want change. ... To me this really feels like the end of a reign."

Unlike nearly all its neighbors, Senegal does not have history of violent demonstrations, or of military intervention in state affairs. The country was shaken, however, by the riots that shut down the capital last summer when Wade's party attempted to rush a law through parliament that would have created the post of vice president, a move that critics said was as an attempt to create a mechanism of succession through which Wade could pass power to his son.

At Place de l'Obelisque, hundreds of youths gathered to protest before the court's decision, saying they planned to turn it into the equivalent of Egypt's Tahrir Square if the five judges presiding over the constitutional court validate Wade's candidacy.

"Everyone knows that the Senegalese people are politically mature. Everyone knows that Wade's candidacy is anti-constitutional. The court must play the role of referee," said 34-year-old Ibrahima Diop, who like many in the square is unemployed. "We placed a lot of hope in Abdoulaye Wade. He let us down. We deserve better."

Rome is under shipping blockade by truckers after Sicily, TSHF in Italy

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: www.vnnforum.com --- Wednesday, January 25, 2012
These guys might even genetically reproduce Mussolini one day as far as I know them. :D It seems the organizers of the blockades are demanding to put the brakes on their own political animals. The western media in general covered up the story for long days? as usual. ?Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti?s resolve to push through aggressive austerity and economic reform efforts are receiving their first real test as truckers? blockades throughout the country threaten to strangle the life out of the biggest cities. Strikes and road blockades that started in Sicily last week have reached Rome, disrupting food and fuel supplies to the city. The truckers have snarled traffic on the main highways and toll stations leading into Rome, and other big cities, and have vowed to keep the protest intact until at least Friday. ? ?In central Rome, fresh fruit, vegetables and fish were in short supply in some covered markets and supermarkets. At least half the stalls in one well-known market, in the Testaccio neighbourhood, were closed Wednesday for lack of supplies. Some shop owners urged customers to load up because they were unsure when delivery trucks would next appear. Wednesday?s newspapers reported that up to 80 per cent of the distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables in Rome had vanished, and 90 per cent of the fresh fish. Prices for some vegetables still available, including zucchini and Sicilian peppers, had doubled as some customers w ...

Japan's NEC to slash 10,000 jobs (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? NEC Corp said Thursday it will slash 10,000 jobs, almost one in 10 of its workers, in a bid to cut costs as competition from foreign rivals including Apple Inc pushes it deep into the red.

NEC blamed its poor performance on weak demand for its smartphones amid the popularity of Apple's iPhone in Japan, as well as on inroads by foreign rivals into the domestic IT infrastructure business and difficulty in expanding overseas.

It warned it would post a net loss of 100 billion yen ($1.3 billion) for the year to March 31, much bigger than its previous forecast of a 15 billion yen profit and a similar average estimate from eight analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

For the three months ended December 31 it booked a net loss of 87 billion yen.

It also slashed its projection for annual mobile phone sales by nearly a quarter to 5 million phones and most of the job cuts will be in its mobile phone business.

Headcount will be reduced by the end of September and around 7,000 layoffs will be in Japan, Nobuhiro Endo said at a news conference in Tokyo.

Endo said NEC will miss a target to raise overall sales to 4 trillion yen next business year but would still try to reach a goal of boosting its operating profit margin to 5 percent.

The restructuring would result in a charge of 40 billion yen this financial year but would add 40 billion yen to income in the next financial year, Endo added.

Shares of NEC finished unchanged from Wednesday's close at 168 yen. In the past 52 weeks, its shares have plummeted 32 percent. The company announced its results and restructuring plan after the market closed.

Egypt bans travel for US official's son, 9 others (AP)

CAIRO ? Egypt has banned the son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and at least five other Americans from leaving the country, officials said Thursday, heightening tensions over an Egyptian investigation into groups that promote democracy and human rights.

The State Department's highest human rights official, Michael Posner, said the move raised concerns about Egypt's transition to democracy after Hosni Mubarak's ouster and could jeopardize badly needed American aid.

The debate over the role of non-governmental organizations in Egypt comes amid a wider struggle over the direction of the country nearly one year after the 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak on Feb. 11.

The military rulers who assumed power have blamed "foreign elements" for the recent unrest and cracked down on rights groups, further straining ties with their U.S. ally. The U.S. Congress has passed legislation linking the continuation of American aid to pro-democratic reforms, including allowing non-governmental organizations to operate.

The travel ban became public after Sam LaHood, Egypt director for the Washington-based International Republican Institute, went to Cairo's airport on Saturday to catch a flight and was told by an immigration official that he couldn't leave.

"I asked her why I was denied, she said she didn't know. I asked how to fix it, and she said she didn't know," said LaHood, 36. An hour later, a man gave him back his passport and escorted him to the curb, LaHood said. "It's a dark signal for groups who are interested in doing this kind of work."

Meghan Keck, a spokeswoman for LaHood's father ? a former congressman from Illinois and the only Republican in President Barack Obama's Cabinet ? declined to comment.

The IRI, which is connected to the Republican party, monitored Egypt's recent parliamentary elections. It also was one of 17 organizations targeted in raids last month by Egyptian security forces, who sealed doors with wax and hauled off cash, computers and boxes of files.

The U.S. and the U.N. denounced the raids, but the Egyptian government defended them as part of a legitimate investigation into whether the groups were operating in the country legally.

Sen. John McCain blasted Egypt's handling of the issue in a statement Thursday, saying the American groups had made every effort to comply with Egyptian law.

He warned that continued restrictions on civil society groups "could set back the long-standing partnership between the United States and Egypt."

A lawyer later told LaHood he has been accused of two crimes: managing an unregistered NGO and receiving funds from an unregistered NGO, namely, his salary. If convicted, LaHood said, he could face a fine and between six months and five years in prison.

LaHood said his organization applied for official status when it began operating in Egypt in 2005. The government never gave it a definitive answer, though LaHood says the organization was in frequent communication with the Foreign Ministry about its activities.

Other organizations also have operated in Egypt for years in the same legal limbo.

Posner told reporters in Cairo Thursday that non-governmental organizations in Egypt operate in a "difficult environment" and called on Egyptian authorities to "redress the situation."

"All need to have the ability to operate openly, freely, without constraint, not based on the content of their work," he said.

Posner pointed to recent U.S. legislation requiring Egypt to verify certain benchmarks during its transition to democracy in order to continue to receive American aid. He said that antidemocratic moves could affect U.S. aid to Egypt, one the world's largest recipients.

"Obviously, any action that creates tension between our governments makes the whole package more difficult," he said.

The pressure on non-governmental organizations follows frequent accusations by Egyptian authorities blaming "foreign hands" for continued demonstrations and violence between protesters and security forces.

It remains unclear how many people are affected by the travel ban.

Other American organizations raided include Freedom House and the National Democratic Institute, which also monitored Egypt's recent elections.

LaHood said his lawyer has been told that four of the group's employees, three Americans and one European, are on the list.

A spokeswoman for Freedom House, Mary McGuire, said she was unaware of any change in the employees' status.

Lisa Hughes, director of the Egypt office of the National Democratic Institute, said Egyptian authorities have said that six staffers are on the list, three Americans and three Serbs. All have been interrogated about the group's activities.

Hughes, who is on the list, was planning fly home to the U.S. next month, she said. Her organization was also raided in December.

"I think we would be silly not to be concerned," she said. "We were concerned the moment armed men showed up at our office door, and this has done nothing to calm those concerns."

Hundreds of Egyptian protesters, meanwhile, remained camped out in Cairo's central Tahrir Square, a day after the area was flooded by several hundred thousands of people to mark the first anniversary of the uprising that has changed the political landscape of the country, giving rise to Islamists who were long suppressed under Mubarak's rule.

In an effort to assuage concerns it is seeking control of the country, the top leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, which has emerged as the biggest player in the first post-Mubarak parliament, said his group did not intend to back any Islamist in presidential elections now scheduled to be held before the end of June.

"We are joining the rest of the nationalist forces in choosing a person who enjoys consensus without prejudices to anyone," Mohammed Badei said, according to Egypt's state news agency.

Wounded Giffords resigns from Congress (Reuters)

TUCSON, Ariz (Reuters) ? Representative Gabrielle Giffords, gravely wounded a year ago in a deadly Tucson shooting spree, submitted her resignation from Congress on Wednesday to focus on her recovery.

"The only way I ever served my district in Congress was by giving 100 percent. This past year that's what I have given to my recovery," Giffords said in letters to House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner and Arizona Governor Jan Brewer.

"This past year my colleagues and staff have worked to make sure my constituents were represented in Congress. But if I can't return, my district deserves to elect a U.S. Representative who can give 100 percent to the job," she added.

Her resignation will be effective at the end of the day on Wednesday.

The three-term Arizona Democrat was holding a meet-and-greet event at a Tucson supermarket on January 8 last year when a gunman opened fire.

Six people were killed, including a 9-year-old girl and a federal judge, and 12 others were wounded including Giffords, who was shot through the head.

She has since received intensive therapy at a Texas hospital to recover from the injury that left her with broken speech and a marked limp.

Giffords announced she would step down on Sunday, and has since carried out final visits and duties in the swing district where she won reelection by only 4,000 votes in 2010, a year that saw many Democrats lose seats.

On Tuesday night, she received a standing ovation from colleagues and a hug and kiss from President Barack Obama in an emotional appearance at the State of the Union address in Washington.

Giffords cast a last vote in the House on Wednesday for legislation she crafted with Republican colleague Rep. Jeff Flake to levy new penalties on traffickers using small, low-flying aircraft to smuggle drugs across the U. S. border from Mexico.

In a rare display of bipartisanship, the vote on the Giffords legislation was 408 to 0.

A centrist seen is a rising Democratic star in Congress, Giffords pledged on Wednesday to return to public service in the future.

"Every day, I am working hard. I will recover and will return, and we will work together again, for Arizona and for all Americans," she wrote.

Jared Loughner, a college dropout, was charged with first-degree murder, the attempted assassination of Giffords and other crimes stemming from the shooting. He pleaded not guilty and was found mentally unfit to stand trial.

Ashley Robles Conquers Whitney, Awarded Golden Ticket [Video]

Ashley Robles took on arguably the most difficult challenge one can give oneself on last night's American Idol audition show:

She covered the Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston classic "I Will Always Love You."

But Robles rose to the occasion, belting out an impression version that granted the single mother access to Hollywood from all three judges, with Randy Jackson wondering where the heck Ashley has been all the time. Are we looking at a new frontrunner?

NOTE: Due to its late airing on the East Coast, this San Diego-based episode will be shown again tomorrow night on Fox, prior to President Obama's State of the Union Address. Tune in to watch such contenders as Aubree Dieckmeyer and Jane Carrey.

Note: starred positions are wanted roles.
*Oyabun [Chairman/patriarch] ? Your quintessential godfather. The oyabun knows all, hears all, and wears the best ties. He is the overseer to his family. No proposal is enacted upon without his word.

*Ane-san [Older sister] ? Under normal circumstances, an ane serves as little more than a wife, and her authority is severely limited. But she is more than mother?she is queen. What elevates the ane-san is, indeed, her status as the Demon Queller. There are others who possess her gift, but none who wield it with such magnitude, the perks of being an ancestral wonder. Utilizing Shinto artifacts and daily prayer, her presence is what keeps malicious influence at bay. This role is exclusively Terajima.

*Saiko komon [Senior adviser] ? One of the oyabun's most trusted. As primarily administrative assistant, the saiko komon deals quite formally, situated at the business end of the organization, but he does maintain several areas throughout the territory. Underneath him are several accountants, enforcers, and junior advisers. Any decisions that the patriarch considers are usually first told to the saiko komon to then be relayed to the rest of the family.

So-honbucho [Headquarters chief] ? Just as his title proclaims. The so-honbucho is master of the domain, the captain. His influence is not as far-reaching as others', as it is focused on keeping the yakuza base afloat. Frequently in cahoots with the saiko kamon and the oyabun, he is a powerful man with several gangs in tow.

*Waka-gashira [Second-in-command] ? Head underboss and fortified pimp. As lieutenant, the gashira serves as a middle man, a keeper of several regions, and a leader of gangs. Most importantly, he sees that the oyabun's orders are properly carried out by younger brothers.

Fuku-honbucho [Assistant] ? Right-hander of the waka-gashira and... yep, right-hander of the waka-gashira.

Shatei-gashira [Third-in-command] ? Like the waka-gashira, property and members are his to govern. He is leader of the kyodai and ensures that their jobs are performed efficiently.

Kyodai [Senior bosses/older brothers] ? Headed by the shatei-gashira, the kyodai are also entitled to individual gangs, but territory is not theirs to control, merely to protect.

*Shatei [Junior bosses/younger brothers] ? As one would suspect, shatei are headed by kyodai. The shatei, in turn, lead sub-divisions of wakashu, who may refer to their older brothers as aniki.

*Wakashu [Gang members/young men] ? Foot soldiers. Wakashu do not have their own gangs--they are the gangs. Supervised by their brothers, they perform without a moment's hesitation, and they know well that they are fully disposable.

Tsume [Trainees] ? Entry-levels. Tsume are not field hands; rather, their duties are more low-key, often unseen, and they would be more readily found preparing for banquets or cleaning headquarters than wielding arms.

Andromeda Training Launches Visual Finance iPad App

Chapel Hill, NC (PRWEB) January 11, 2012

Andromeda Training, a business acumen training company with clients throughout the world, announces the launch of Visual Finance, an iPad app that visually delivers the key components necessary to analyze the financial health of a company.

Visual Finance shows the income statement and balance sheet in a single graphical representation, instantly showing the relationships between these key financial indicators. The unique visual picture helps make financial analysis quick and intuitive. The single-glance view is interactive: tap and see the numbers in the related financial statement, key ratios, or glossary definitions. Instead of paging back and forth, trying to compare complex numerical data, this simple, single picture gives the user an instant read on a company.

?In our business we see many people who have a fear of financial numbers. They look at financial statements and aren?t able to process the information in any meaningful way. The visualization methodology we use in Visual Finance makes it easy to see rather than calculate financial ratios,? said Eliza Helweg-Larsen, co-founder of Andromeda Training. ?It allows even the most finance phobic person to analyze a company?s financial health without having to rely on others to run the numbers for them.?

Robin Helweg-Larsen, co-founder of Andromeda Training added, ?Our company has been involved in helping people understand finance for over 20 years. The iPad seemed like a natural fit for us and a way that we could bring the financial visualization we use in our Income Outcome business acumen training workshops to a whole new audience. Visual Finance is an intuitive and natural way of comparing and prioritizing data whether you?re a stock market investor, a salesperson looking at clients, or a manager trying to develop a big picture of the company.

?Chapel Hill based Four Clouds, LLC developed the app for us. They were great to work with and provided insights and suggestions that improved the final product.?

Visual Finance is free to download at the iTunes App Store and the iPad App Store. Upgrading to the full version allows users to look at the current and past annual financial reports for over 450 of the world?s top companies, including most of the Fortune 500

It's guys, not ladies, who splurge on lunch

Getty Images / Getty Images file

A man eats his lunch at a Burger King in London.

By Allison Linn

The next time you stop in for a morning latte or head out for a restaurant lunch, take a look around ? and don?t be surprised if you see a lot of young men standing in line.

A new survey of workers finds that men spend significantly more on coffee and lunch than women.

The survey, from staffing firm Accounting Principals, also found that younger workers spend more than older workers on lunch and coffee during the workday.

Overall, those lunches out and coffee breaks are costing workers a bundle.? American workers who buy coffee and lunch spend an average of $1,000 a year on coffee and $2,000 a year on lunch, based on the survey of 1,000 workers.

About two-thirds of workers buy lunch and half buy coffee during the week.

Men were slightly more likely than women to go out to eat, but they spent a lot more. The men who buy their lunches spend an average of $46.30 on lunch each week, compared with $26.50 for women who go out to eat.

Men who buy coffee spend an average of $25.70 vs. $15 for women.

The caffeine fix is a bigger hit on the wallets of 18- to 34-year-old workers. Younger workers who buy coffee spend an average of $24.74 a week on coffee, compared with $14.15 for workers 45 and older who buy coffee during the work week. Younger workers also spend far more on lunch than older workers: about $45 a week vs. $32.

Not surprisingly, a third of those surveyed said one of their goals for 2012 was to bring their own lunch more often.

Accounting Principals, a unit of Adecco, commissioned the survey in December.

Tip of the hat to Consumerist, which first reported on the study.

Researchers map 3D cancer protein

Scientists in Glasgow have created the first 3D image of a key protein which can help prevent cancer.

c-Cbl controls cell growth which, when unregulated, causes cells to divide excessively and can lead to cancer. It can be defective in leukaemia patients.

By mapping the protein researchers at the Beatson Institute have found it changes shape when working properly.

They say the discovery is a step towards designing more effective cancer drugs in the future.

The Cancer Research UK team used hi-tech X-ray analysis to map out the structure of the protein.

They said discovering that c-Cbl can switch between two shapes could help scientists find ways to prevent faulty c-Cbl from triggering cancer.

Uncontrolled growth

Dr Danny Huang, who led the research, said: "Using cutting-edge research techniques we've created the first 3D image of the structure of this protein - which is pretty incredible because in real life it's about the size of a millionth of a hair width.

"We were intrigued to see that this protein actually changes shape when it's switched on.

End Quote Dr Julie Sharp Cancer Research UK

"Understanding the structure of this protein is vital because if the protein can't be switched on it is more likely to cause cancer. So cracking the 3D structure is a step towards designing the cancer drugs of the future."

The team showed that when it is "switched on" c-Cbl labels a cell receptor molecule for destruction. In healthy cells this means the cell growth signal is switched off at the right time.

However, in cancer cells the signals do not get switched off, leading to uncontrolled cell growth.

If c-Cbl cannot change to its active shape, it cannot label the receptor for destruction.

Dr Julie Sharp, senior science information manager at Cancer Research UK, said: "Thanks to the generosity of the public, we're able to spend more than ?18m each year on a range of projects in Glasgow.

"Research like this helps us better understand how cancer cells grow, survive and spread.

"We hope these intriguing 3D structures of a key cancer protection protein will help pave the way to new approaches to tackle this disease more effectively."

The scientists' findings are published in Nature Structural & Molecular Biology.

Nearly Extinct Primate Rediscovered in Borneo [Video]

langursResearchers working on the island of Borneo have discovered two tiny new populations of Miller?s grizzled langurs (Presbytis hosei canicrus), one of the world?s 25 most endangered primates. The species is so rare that it has probably disappeared from all of its previously known habitats, which have been almost completely logged and burned out of existence. The langur was last observed in 2008 (pdf) in an isolated patch of mangrove forest on the banks of the Baai River which flows through Borneo?s Sangkulirang Peninsula, when just five of the primates were found. Those five langurs have not been seen since.

But now two teams of researchers?working independently of each other?have located two new populations of the animals in Wehea Forest, 150 kilometers inland from their previously known locations. It?s a discovery that points to the possibility of additional langur populations and offers hope that the species can be saved from extinction. The news was published online January 20 in the American Journal of Primatology.

The researchers weren?t looking for the langurs. Stephanie Spehar, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Wisconsin?Oshkosh, was in Wehea studying the behavioral ecology of the area?s other primates?including Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus), Bornean gibbons (Hylobates muelleri) and red langurs (Presbytis rubicunda)?when one of her students, Eric Fell, captured photos of a primate they did not recognize.

Eight kilometers away, a research team led by Brent Loken, a PhD student at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, had set up camera traps hoping to capture images of the elusive Bornean clouded leopard (Neofelis diardi). Instead, they also found images of a primate they did not recognize.

Spehar and Loken, who each work with the local Wehea Dayak community to help preserve the forest, compared notes and concluded that they had observed the same species.

?We realized that our research groups had simultaneously discovered this rare primate, Miller?s grizzled langur, in the Wehea Forest,? Spehar says. ?It was definitely unexpected, but the best kind of surprise for a group of primatologists and conservation biologists.?

Positively identifying the langur wasn?t easy. ?The pictures we have are some of the only pictures that exist of this monkey and therefore confirming its identity was a bit of a challenge,? Loken says. ?The current description of this monkey comes from museum specimens, and the pictures that we took did not fit perfectly with the previous description of this monkey.? His colleague, Stanislav Lhota of the University of South Bohemia in the Czech Republic, contacted three primatologists with extensive experience in Borneo, all of whom agreed that the teams had located the Miller?s grizzled langur.

The researchers later found out that two other researchers had observed and photographed the langurs in Wehea in 2008 and 2010 but they had not been identified as this rare species. Those photos had never been published.

Spehar and Loken?s teams observed the Miller?s grizzled langurs in Wehea near two mineral springs in June and July 2011. They reported observing the langurs on five out of nine days; the greatest number of animals they saw was on July 11 when they spotted 11 individuals. The adults were estimated at about six to seven kilograms??pretty big for a Bornean forest mammal,? Spehar says?and were easily distinguishable from Wehea?s three other langur species by their gray limbs, white underbellies, black faces and full white beards.

Unfortunately, the researchers concluded that the population density for this species in Wehea Forest is still extremely low. They explain that all of the forest?s resident primate species tend to gather at mineral springs for reasons that are not yet known, so observations there do not reflect possible population density throughout the 38,000-hectare forest.

The researchers are now calling for increased efforts to protect Wehea Forest from logging and deforestation, which have already destroyed 95 percent of the langurs? previous habitats. Loken himself co-founded a nonprofit called Ethical Expeditions which helps the indigenous Wehea Dayak people fight back against deforestation.

Meanwhile, Spehar, Loken and Lhota have shifted some of the focus of their ongoing research to learn more about the Miller?s grizzled langur.

Loken discusses the discovery and shows off time-lapse photographs of the Miller?s grizzled langurs here:

Romney tries to change the subject from his taxes (AP)

GILBERT, S.C. ? Working to fend off a surging Newt Gingrich in what's become an unexpectedly tight race, presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Friday tried to change the subject from his unreleased tax returns to the ethics investigation Gingrich faced 15 years ago.

Romney's campaign appeared visibly rattled the day before the South Carolina primary, his standing in polls having tumbled after a week of constant attack ads and self-made problems. The former Massachusetts governor faced a potentially difficult day Saturday, and senior aides acknowledged they wouldn't be surprised if he lost the primary.

Romney came to South Carolina after twin victories in Iowa and New Hampshire, only to see his Iowa victory thrown into question because of problems with the count. He's spent a week trying to answer questions about his personal wealth and when he will release his tax returns.

Gingrich's House reprimand in 1997 presented an opportunity to talk about something else. When asked if Gingrich should release the Ethics Committee report that resulted in the first such action against a House speaker, Romney replied, "Of course he should."

"Nancy Pelosi has the full record of that ethics investigation," he said. "You know it's going to get out ahead of the general election."

In fact, the 1,280-page committee report on Gingrich is already public. Campaign officials said Romney was referring to other documents that Gingrich has referenced and that Pelosi has also mentioned.

"Given Speaker Gingrich's newfound interest in disclosure and transparency, and his concern about an `October surprise,' he should authorize the release of the complete record of the ethics proceedings against him," Romney spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said.

Romney's campaign is calling South Carolina voters with a recording attacking Gingrich's ethics record and calling on him to release any documents related to the inquiry.

In December, Pelosi told Talking Points Memo that she had served on the committee that conducted the investigation and implied that more information about the investigation could come to light. At the time Gingrich said the House should retaliate against Pelosi if she released any additional information.

"We turned over 1 million pages of material," Gingrich said then. "We had a huge report."

Gingrich's campaign said Romney's criticism represented a "panic attack" on the part of his campaign.

Romney on Friday said again that he wouldn't release his tax returns until April, which would probably be after Republicans choose their nominee.

"I realize that I had a lot of ground to make up and Speaker Gingrich is from a neighboring state, well-known, popular in the state," Romney said as he campaigned in Gilbert. "Frankly, to be in a neck-and-neck race at this last moment is kind of exciting."

Romney's campaign has rolled out endorsement after endorsement this week as he has tried to build a case that he is the most electable nominee. Ohio Sen. Rob Portman joined him on Thursday and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell campaigned with him Friday.

McDonnell said Friday he had been in touch with Romney's campaign for several weeks as they discussed the timing for the endorsement ? and decided it was most needed now, even as Romney looks ahead to a long campaign.

"It's the first Southern primary. I'm a Southern governor. I thought I could help," McDonnell said.

But the campaign's attack message has jumped from rival to rival and topic to topic as Romney's fought to stay afloat here.

At the beginning of the week, Romney was attacking rival Rick Santorum over voting rights for felons. Then he went after Gingrich's claims that he created jobs under President Ronald Reagan, saying Gingrich was living in "fantasyland." Meanwhile, his surrogates held a series of conference calls attacking his rivals, first calling Gingrich an unreliable leader and then pivoting to attack his ethics record.

In Thursday night's GOP debate, Romney continued his string of off-message remarks about his wealth, saying he has lived "in the real streets of America." A multimillionaire, he has three homes, one each in Massachusetts, California and New Hampshire.

Romney held three campaign events Friday in his last-ditch push to stem Gingrich's momentum. After stopping in Gilbert, he held a rally in North Charleston and flew to Greenville in the conservative upstate for a nighttime rally and a stop at his campaign headquarters before an evening event in Columbia, the state capital.

On a plane between events Friday night, Romney was outwardly cheerful in spite of a difficult day ahead, gamely bantering with reporters as he served pastries from Panera Bread.

"Pain au chocolat, smart move!" he said to one, proferring the box and a pair of tongs to take the desserts.

As he moved farther back into the plane, though, he dispensed with the tongs.

"Just use your fingers," he said. "To heck with it!"

2 journalists killed in Nigeria amid unrest (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? Two journalists have been killed in Nigeria in different attacks amid continuing unrest in Africa's most populous nation, authorities said Saturday.

Journalist Enenche Akogwu, who worked as a correspondent in Kano for private news station Channels Television, was shot and killed Friday while reporting on coordinated attacks there claimed by the radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram, colleagues said. Akogwu had shown up after a bombing and began filming a crowd gathered there, not knowing they were armed sect members, colleagues said.

Akogwu, 31, joined Channels Television as a reporter in Nigeria's capital Abuja in 2010 before being assigned to Kano, the station said.

"My love for Nigeria has been a compelling impetus charting the course of my life ? courageous in the face of adversities, hopeful when confronted with despair and delighted when the society makes appreciable progress," the station quoted Akogwu as once saying.

Meanwhile, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said a news editor for a government-owned radio station called Highland FM in the restive central Nigerian city of Jos was found dead in a shallow stream Thursday. Colleagues of Nansok Sallah, 46, believe he was murdered, the committee said.

Sallah previously worked for private radio station Cool FM in Abuja and Plateau State Radio and Television, the committee said.

"We mourn the death of Nansok Sallah and extend our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues," said Mohamed Keita, the committee's Africa Advocacy Coordinator. "Authorities in Jos must pursue all leads in tracking his killer and bring those responsible to justice."

While Nigeria has an unruly free press, journalists have been attacked and killed in the oil-rich nation over their reporting in the past. In October, Zakariya Isa, a journalist for the state-run Nigerian Television Authority, was killed by Boko Haram gunmen in the northeastern city of Maiduguri, allegedly over stories he filed.
