EWING, N.J. ? The chairman of the 9/11 Commission says the United States is safer now than it was when terrorists attacked New York and Washington 10 years ago. But Tom Kean Sr. says terrorism remains a significant threat.
The former New Jersey governor says he's particularly concerned about domestic terrorists because people with U.S. passports who want to do harm are more difficult to thwart than international terrorists.
Kean's comments came Friday during an address to law enforcement officers at a regional operations center in Ewing, N.J.
Earlier, Homeland Security chief Charles McKenna said New Jersey is an "appetizing target" for terrorists wishing to strike on the anniversary of 9/11.
Security has been beefed up ahead of Saturday's commemoration at Liberty State Park and Sunday's New York Jets-Dallas Cowboys football game at the Meadowlands.
