Video: Clinton shuttles to Egypt to negotiate cease-fire

>> ayman mohyeldin is in gaza where the violence is still raging. good morning.

>> reporter: what a difference 24 hours makes. yesterday morning the people of gaza woke up to a news that a truce could be in the works. instead, they are waking up to the news of that explosion in israel . more deadly attacks over the gaza strip overnight and news that a cease-fire could be reached is not likely to happen any time soon. there were talks of peace late into the night , but in gaza it was anything but quiet. while israel and palestinian factions todayed fire, secretary of state hillary clinton arrived to the region to broker a truce, meeting today with palestinian president mahmoud abbas and last night with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu .

>> the united states will work with our partners towards an outcome that bolsters security for the people of israel , improve conditions for the people of gaza , and move toward a comprehensive peace.

>> reporter: and while the sides talked peace, gaza remained a war zone . daylight revealed the scope of israel 's destruction. this, it claims, was a hamas terror hub. this government building was the intended target, but there was no one here at the time of the strike. it's the ordinary people that live in residential buildings and offices like this one behind me that are paying the ultimate price. it's what israel calls collateral damage. the israeli bombardment has forced thousands to escape to schools turned into makeshift shelters like this one. ten rockets landed here, one hitting a home.

>> all the talk about the cease-fire, boom, they are shooting rockets at us.

>> reporter: and if the rockets don't stop, israel washes it's prepared to invade gaza . for now though it's relying on its superior air power . overnight it struck tens of targets including this key bridge effectively cutting gaza in half. while the rockets and missiles fly in diplomatic efforts are in full swing, it's still anyone's guess which way this war will go. the secretary of state's next stop will be cairo, egypt, where officials there have been mediating between palestinian factions and israel . it's unlikely to get a truce that will address all of these comprehensive issues. right now what they are really working for is to get a cessation of hostilities to avert the possibility of a grund war. matt?

>> ayman mohyeldin in gaza this morning. thanks very much. here's
